[Blog] The Current Team
Written by superblueflude on Friday, 23rd Oct 2009 12:39

Looking through the comments left on some of these stories, I thought I would ask in one blog, why people's perceptions of the current team change per match.

Starting in goal. Richard Wright has been a legend for Town, from back in the day before heading off for Arsenal, then coming back to help us maintain our presence in the Championship. But why are so many people hanging on to idea that because of his saving abilities, he should be in the team?

There has got to be some supporters out there who can admit that Wright's distribution is terrible, his commanding of his area is dreadful and communication doesn't exist.

Think back to right at the start of the season against Coventry, any need for rushing out? How many times has he dropped the ball at corners? Now people blame the defence for Wright's lack of confidence, however I feel it's the other way round.

Wright's below-par performances have hurt the defence, how can they gain confidence if they don't feel they have the necessary cover from their goalie? All I hope is that dropping Wright brings out the best in him and I for one feel that it will.

Now the defence, so many combinations but what is the best? I think we have now found our defence, Good strong Wright at left-back, McAuley's beginning to find his form, which for me has begun to get stronger since he lost the captaincy, Smith for me is a talented player and one who I firmly believe will become a Town legend just like Butcher, and Rosenior - speedy, strong and reminds me of Taricco.

That for me is our defence, forget Bruce for a second, why bring him in? Yes he's good at no nonsense defending, hoof ball etc, we don't need him at the moment. I know I am going to get loads of shouting at that one.

Now midfield, Garvan, Garvan, Garvan that is all I hear - come on fans be honest with yourselves, yes, Garvan had promise, but that's the word had, so did Bowditch so did Clarke. Keane has dropped him and reports are that he's already looking stronger, meaner and could come back in the fold in time - don't rush it, bring him back in when he can be the player us fans want him to be.

And to Trotter, so many fans dislike this guy? Why, think of Matty Holland, never did much, passed it around a bit, tackled and held the midfield. Look carefully at Trotter, does the same, holds the midfield and enables Leadbitter to get forward. Tuesday night showed how well the midfield controlled the game and this is thanks to Trotter. Give him time he will become the Town version of Vieira, if not then soon we'll get the fantastic Norris back in, and the improved Garvan.

Leadbitter, I'm not going to say much apart from what a player. Enough said I think.

Edwards is beginning to show his worth and I think he will become another one of those players that Town fans will remember for years to come.

On the left, Peters, Martin, Quinn? Who's best? For me it's Peters, but only for speed, depends on who we're playing really, but don't forget somebody's coming back soon - Civelli. What a midfield we will have.

Now the strikers. People keep saying why does Keane pick Walters up front when he can't score? The same reason why Capello picks Heskey, he brings other players into the frame.

The others, Couñago, Wickham, Stead or Priskin, none of them really have done anything special, however, Priskin has showed signs that with a run he will be good, same as Stead. Wickham is our future, Couñago is one of my favourite players but mainly for the way he can hold the ball, so for me I would always play him, but maybe as a player to hold a lead. How about starting Priskin and Walters every game?

Let me know of your thoughts.

I agree that there is plenty more to come from Priskin, he hasn't had a run in the side and didn't have much time to bed in early on as he was away on international duty so much. Let's not forget it was half a season before Watford saw the best from him and once he got going his form was very impressive. That doesn't really help us right now, but I think it's too early to write off Priskin as a poor signing.

I agree on plug to a point, but I don't think he's been quite as bad as you say. Certainly I think Roy has done a very good job of bring Bergovic in to steady the ship, give Wrighty some down time and a bit of a kick up the backside. Let's not forget he has had no compeition for his place since supple left (the other lad is simply emergency cover and was signed in a hurry as we had no backup keeper).

Can't fault what you've said about the defence and I must admit I thought Roy was wrong for picking Smith against Swansea ahead of Bruce (if he was fit) and thought the same again for Watford. However Smith has shown real promise over the last two games, has started to form a good partnership with McAuley and has made our defence look far more stingy.

I agree to a point on Trotter, but I probably wouldn't be picking him ahead of Garvan and certainly wouldn't pick him ahead of Quinn. I've got plenty of time for Trotter, he's still young and learning his trade, but right now he looks far too limited compared to some of our other options and often looks like he is swimming in treacle over the first 10 yards. He is certainly no Matty Holland, who imo was only ever doubted by fans with a poor understanding of team football.

I agree, yep. I think Trotter's still a bit inexperienced and basically people are noticing his mistakes more than his good performances. Now Delaney's been removed, people need someone to boo, apparently.

I do like Delaney and I would have him and Bruce on the bench. The back line is absolutely right now I think - it's looking solid.

I hope the front line is going to be Priskin and Walters, with Pablo and/or Stead coming off the bench.

I think the starting line up for the plymouth game will be as follows:

Begovic
rosenior, mcauley, smith, wright,
edwards, trotter, leadbitter, quinn,
Stead Counago/priskin

Im abit hit and miss about the strike pairing because i think he realises that without walters he needs someone who whos decent in the air which priskin isnt that great at so maybe stead comes into play after his 2 goals in reserves mid-week. and im not 100% about counago as there is rumours he needs a rest, no sure though. i think quinn comes in for martin as he didnt really do much but give the ball away on tuesday, however i feel taking him off at half time was a mistake. and the defence picks them self at the moment as you can barely fault them.

Blue army, come on you blues lets get that much needed 1st win.

Yeah, pretty much. I hope it is Stead who gets to start - he's my favourite player.

I don't think Smith will become a Town legend. He is simply not good enough.

I agree Wright had lost confidence whether he was trying to hard because of a weak defence in front or vice versa we wont know until he comes back as his dropping coincided with the return of David Wright to steady the ship as we knew it would .

The defence is fine and will continue to improve the more they play with each other.

The midfield has the potential to be great against any opposition Leadbitter quality , Norris to return to add energy ,Civelli on the left .The Garvan situation bemuses me when everyone says his potential was great but he hasnt lived up to it ,the fact he hasnt become the next Gerrard is why he is still at Ipswich ,this doesnt make him a bad player overnight ,he is the best passer in the club and the most creative IMO ,he has only started 3 times for Keane 2 of those games we won . Those saying give young Trotter a run and time he is improving ,i believe he has had a run and is not quite there yet perhaps dropping him will give him the same fight that apparantly it has done for Wight ,Mac and maybe Garvan(already good players before being dropped IMO).
On the right Edwards is starting to perform which causes a problem because Walters best position is right wing where he is more of a goal threat also(maybe a signing which wasnt as urgent as other positions ?)

Up front i believe any pairing could do a job if they are given faith from the manager and a run in the team ,he needs to decide and stick with it for a few weeks now as on paper we have 3 of the easiest sides we will play this season .My choice would be Pablo and Stead as Pablo links the team better than anyone and Stead is our best natural goalscorer IMO,but to be fair we havent seen a lot of Priskin.
Overall times will certainly get better and the climb will start tomorrow !!!

I agree, would still like a more experienced centre half in for smith but at the same time the more he plays now the better and better he is going to get!

I dont really like quinn, he works hard but lacks any real quality. I would have peters, again for his pace, although that is only til civelli returns! I think Trotter has played well but believe Garvan would do a better job.

We may be bottom now but if the likes of Smith, Garvan, Trotter Wickham are played regularly(ish) we will have a succesful team next year - although that may be in league one if were not carefull.

Finally somebody who doesnt think Trotter is the worst player in the world! He reminds me of Carrick at United in how he plays but obviously not as good. Smith has been our most reliable centre half this season and deserves his place on the team sheet on merit. Interesting to see who is captain tomorrow. David Wright? Leadbitter? MacAuley?

I'd make Leadbitter captain, Macauley would be to nervous again trying to concentrate on defending and being captain, same for Wright i think leadbitter would make a great captain.

I have to agree with some comments from people, but not all. To start with a rant...

Dale - why say Smith is not good enough as if he has been playing tha game for years, he's only 19yrs old, and dispite that, he has put in two good performances (although I do believe he was at fault for both the last two goals we have conceeded).

Others - why do people still think Pablo isn't important upfront? He is by far the most talented player we have! We lost so much when he went off for Wickham on Tuesday. That is no dig to Wickham, who I believe deserves his hype, considering he's only 16yrs old.... But, why on earth didn't Priskin get to play against his ex club, that could of been the start of his season!

The defence spoke about for me is spot on and as much as I adore R Wright, they do seem more confident without him in the sticks!

Midfield will be spoilt for choice come December and I must admit i was a trotter boo boy up until Tuesday night when I moved my seating position at half time to upper north for a better view of the game and he does look a much better player from that position! Norris will take his place in December anyway, so this could be invaluable experience for him and he will challedge to make the first 11 for the rest of the season.

My love for Pablo is evident from above, but I do believe him and Walters is our best front two to start with, but we have to start to give Priskin minutes, otherwise it could end up to be a proven panic buy!

Overall though - Things are definately looking up! And call me optimistic but a late late push could be on the cards!! (someone has to dream)

I disagree about Smith, he is good enough and looks assured at this level. He would get my vote for young player of the season easily. Think about the serious injuries he has gone through too. He will be a top player for us! Come on you blues!!

??..how can you even begin to compare Trotter to Holland?..nonsense.

PablosRightBoot added 14:53 - Oct 23
Leadbitter is more of a similar player anyway, that is a bit odd. Trotter is given more of a holding role

I would certainly not give the captaincy back to McAuley - and I doubt that he really wants it back. He's playing much better and seems to have re-found his confidence after making some shocking errors earlier in the season.
So, I wouldn't risk things by giving him the additional responsibility at this time.

Leadbitter looks like a good shout for captaincy to me too.

I pretty much concur with superblueflude and would make Leadbitter skipper. Trotter has palyed much better in several (but not all) matches than people give him credit for.

Dirty i too am worried about Callum.
Not the lack of ****** , its more the lack of KEANE OUT, at the bottom of his post, do you think he is being held at gunpoint, or more sinister, he has been snatched by aliens who have taken him over....
If they have good on 'em, a post that made partial sense!!!!
